Eagles committing to Jalen Hurts on Jeffrey Lurie’s orders

The Eagles are committing to quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Philadelphia owner Jeffrey Lurie told team brass to prioritize developing Hurts for the 2021 season as opposed to fostering a quarterback competition, ESPN reported Monday. Hurts is currently the only QB under contract with the Eagles after they traded Carson Wentz to the Colts, and Lurie wants to give the 22-year-old the keys and see if he’s their franchise quarterback, the report said.

Hurts told ESPN’s “Adam Schefter Podcast” that when the Eagles dealt Wentz for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-rounder, he felt it was the organization’s way of pledging its belief in him.

“I think it was just an opportunity for me,” Hurts said when asked whether he was surprised when he heard the Wentz news. “I think it shows the trust and what they think I can be as a player, so I wanna prove them right.”

Hurts, the Eagles’ 2020 second-round pick, took over for Wentz in the final four-plus games of a tumultuous season in Philadelphia. Wentz’s relationship with the Eagles deteriorated amid his career-worst season and he ultimately wanted to get a fresh start somewhere else.

Hurts led the Eagles to an upset victory over the Saints in his first career start and finished the 2020 season completing 52 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and four interceptions.

“I think, you know, nothing changes for me and my mindset, going in every day trying to get better as a player,” he said. “Be the best leader I can be. Impact the guys around me, and ultimately it’s just about winning football games and being consistent and doing that, so my mentality, it doesn’t alter not one bit.”

The Eagles, who own the No. 6-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, likely will to add to the quarterback position either in the draft or in free agency. But one thing is for certain: Hurts is their starter.
