Alex Ovechkin is getting a slap on the wrist for giving another player a shot to the groin.
The NHL fined the Washington Capitals star $5,000 on Thursday for spearing Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic during the Capitals’ shootout win on Wednesday night. The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
Ovechkin, 35, is in the final year of a 13-year, $124 million contract.
During Wednesday’s third period, Frederic dropped his gloves and tried to start a fight with Ovechkin, who wasn’t interested. So Frederic skated away. Moments later, Frederic checked Ovechkin hard to try to goad him again, and Ovechkin jabbed his stick up into Frederic’s groin.
